The Freedom to Read

“The Freedom to Read”- Art/ poetry workshop.

Blaithi, Sarah and Lavie, were so popular with students in February that we were delighted when they returned to Bcs to host an art/ poetry workshop. The workshop took place in the Art room and our library. It allowed students to get creative with poster paints and permanent markers. Every good reader needs a tote to carry about their books. This workshop gave the club a chance to decorate a tote with any drawing of their choice. Students expressed themselves with images of horses, geometric shapes, stars, computer game representations, hearts and flowers. One student had the quote, “the freedom to read”. The results were great and the club now have their own personalised totes to carry books to our next meeting.

Lavie is a poet who has performed her poetry in the Dail in 2022. Sarah has a bookstagram and podcast The Lost Library. Her and Sarah divided the class in two, giving one group the theme of city and the other group countryside. They then linked words so that each line was formed from a select group of interlinking words. The book club enjoyed writing their own poem, impressive lines such as “school gives us the wings to fly like birds”, were written down in a free flowing practice. The club are looking forward to seeing the finished piece in the next issue of Blaithi.
